Household waste per person (kg)

kg/person/year · extracted · council-year

This is the weight of household waste collected per resident per year — roughly how many kilograms of rubbish and recycling each person in the area produces. It measures waste minimisation rather than cost: a low figure means residents throw away less in the first place (the cheapest and greenest outcome), while a high one means more waste for the council to collect and deal with. Because it is per person, it lets you fairly compare places of very different sizes.

Household waste arisings per head (ex-BVPI 84a) — the "waste per head" measure, normalised for population. It indicates how much waste a council's residents generate independent of council size. Useful for comparing waste minimisation performance across councils.
