Residual waste per household (kg)

kg/household/year · extracted · council-year

This is the weight of non-recycled 'black bag' waste each household in the area produces per year, in kilograms. It is one of the most telling waste measures because it combines two good behaviours — throwing away less overall and recycling more of what remains — into one number. A low figure means households generate little leftover waste for burning or burying; a high one means lots of residual rubbish, which is both costlier and worse for the environment.

The standard residual-waste efficiency indicator (ex-NI191): kilograms of non-recycled household waste per household per year; lower is better. It captures how much waste a council's households send to residual treatment after diversion. Prefer this Defra-published figure to hand-rolling the calculation.
